Synagogue

Synagogue

PERIOD: The synagogue was built in 1595

TECHNICAL FEATURES:

The external façade is plain because of the necessity to escape religious intolerance. On the other hand the interior of the building is full of Baroque volutes and gildings.
It was restored in 1969.

Right inside you can visit the interesting Jewish museum of art and ancient history. In particular the permanent exhibition is made of objects, which belong to the communities of Vercelli, Asti and Piedmont.

Especially interesting are The Tables of Law, which date back to the XVIII century, the many Rinonim (the terminals of the Bible scrolls) and Atarot (crowns of the Bible scrolls), which are chiselled or made of silver filigree. There is also a well-equipped collection of ceremonial textiles of the XVII-XVIII century, parchment papers and historical documents, prayer books and church ornaments. Recent donations continue enlarging the museum's collection.

DETAILS:

* Two big bas-reliefs representing Jerusalem and Hebron
* Aran Hakodesh, big wardrobe, where the Bible scrolls (1787) are kept
* Gilded and carved wooden choir
